Peter, this name, meaning ‘rock’
in Greek, was particularly common in Angus and Kincardine. John Peter, a
vassal of the Earl of Mar, was charged with aiding outlawed Macgregors in
1636. David Peter was commissary depute, a Court official responsible for the
registering of wills, in Peebles in 1645. Alexander Peter was a notary public
in Melrose in 1648. A tartan has now been registered for the name, and the
late Edward Leslie Peter, Baron of Lee, resided at Lee Castle near Lanark,
which was extensively remodeled in the nineteenth century with magnificent
interiors by Pugin (most famous for his work on the Houses of Parliament at
Westminster).
